SMILE Project: Bringing Healthcare and Hope Beyond Borders

From 1 to 3 May 2026, the spirit of compassion journeyed deep into the heart of Sabah as the SMILE Project – “Restoring Health & Hope” brought essential healthcare services and humanitarian aid to the remote communities of Kg. Pensiangan and Kg. Salinatan, located near the Malaysia–Indonesia border.
Led by the BIG Pharmacy Jalan Damai team together with healthcare professionals, volunteers, and community partners, the outreach mission was driven by one shared purpose – Ensuring that no community is left behind when it comes to healthcare access and healthcare equity.
Reaching these remote villages was no easy task. The journey involved long hours of travel through rugged terrain and challenging road conditions. Yet, despite the distance and obstacles, 138 dedicated volunteers and 47 units of 4×4 vehicles came together with unwavering commitment to serve communities that often face limited access to medical care and essential necessities.
Throughout the three-day mission, the team successfully provided:
- 217 medical treatments
- 97 dental treatments
- 171 deworming medications distributed
- 111 delousing treatments provided
For many villagers, this outreach represented more than just healthcare services, it was a rare opportunity to receive medical attention, consultations, and treatment close to home. Elderly residents, parents, and children patiently gathered for screenings and treatments, grateful for the care and attention extended to their community.
Beyond healthcare support, families also received essential daily necessities including rice, cooking oil, salt, flour, and other household supplies contributed through collective community support. These contributions helped ease the burden faced by many families living in remote areas with limited access to resources and infrastructure.
What made the outreach truly impactful was not only the number of treatments provided, but the human connections built along the way. Volunteers shared moments of laughter with children, comforted elderly villagers, and listened to stories of resilience from families who continue to face daily challenges with strength and hope.
The SMILE Project continues to embody its mission of restoring health, dignity, and hope to indigenous and underserved communities through structured collaborations between Big Caring Foundation (BCF) and various non-governmental organizations (NGOs). By bringing healthcare directly to vulnerable communities, the initiative helps bridge healthcare disparities while empowering individuals with access to essential medical support and care.
This outreach mission served as a powerful reminder that compassion knows no boundaries. Even in the most remote corners of the country, kindness, unity, and collective action have the power to transform lives.
